Holidays
Once a year it happens. The greast Christmas rush. Everyone goes out to buy gifts for everyone else, fighting each other in frenzy of materialism. Every bit of our media is saturated with secularized images of Sant Clause. Christmas, the once pious holiday in memory of the birth of Christ has been ruined by commercialism. The cultural tragedy of our time. Or is it?
Christmas has been comercialized since before the founding of this counrty. There are revolution erra advertisments featuring Santa Clause bringing gifts down the chimney for children. The only thing that has changed in recent times is t he amount we spend on Christmas. That is only a sign of prosperity. Granted, most of those bilboards featuring Santa Clause are annoying, but thats only because they asttempt to appeal to American pop-culture, which is annoying. This is a very underdeveloped argument but, I believe that the problem is not comercialism but American culture in general.
